Negotiating a brand collaboration as an artist

Most first offers from a brand undervalue what they are actually asking for. Brand collaborations move fast, and a good outcome depends on getting the structure right early. That means negotiating the fee, tightening the scope, clarifying usage and licensing, and keeping the work protected as a commercial project.

What usually needs structuring

  • The artist fee and what it includes
  • Scope creep and additional rounds
  • Usage, licensing and duration
  • Exclusivity and category restrictions
  • Deliverables, deadlines and approvals
  • Production responsibilities and budgets
  • Credit, documentation and attribution

If you are working out the number itself, the brand collaboration fee calculator separates your creative fee from the licence and scales the licence to the usage.

A simple rule of thumb

If you cannot explain what you are delivering, when, and what the brand can use afterwards, the agreement is not ready.

When to bring in representation

  • When budgets are significant
  • When usage rights are broad
  • When the contract is long or unclear
  • When the brand wants fast turnaround
  • When the project involves physical build or installation

Project-based representation

Some opportunities need representation. Others do not.

We offer project-based representation for artists who want structured support for a specific deal or project, without signing into a long-term, all-encompassing arrangement. It suits best when:

  • You have an opportunity in hand
  • You want negotiation support but not full-time management
  • You want clarity on scope, usage and payment terms
  • The project is large, public, or operationally complex

Support can include early strategy, negotiation and contract structuring, and delivery oversight when required.

The work, the voice, the practice and the direction remain yours unless otherwise agreed as part of the project scope. What we add is structure, leverage and clarity around the opportunity.

Getting support

Not sure how to approach the negotiation, or whether you need representation for a specific opportunity? A strategy session lets you work through it with someone experienced. For larger projects that need ongoing representation, get in touch.
